TW For goddamn racist assholes ( in the video).
BYU Students on African Americans
This is sad.
For everyone’s lack of amusement.
So BYU is a bunch of ignorant racists, including the fucking white dude that decided to dress up in blackface like it is nineteen fucking twenty and ask people about BHM.
Why the hell did anyone think this would be MORE effective than just being white and asking these questions? I seriously fucking hate everything.
This is so offensive I can’t even. WHY THE BLACKFACE. WHY. Who cares if some BYU students don’t know when Black History Month is when you’re wearing blackface in public. Wow. JUST. Wow.
Fuck everything, just egads Mormons. Egads. I had to watch all of it to make sure that none of my back-asswards mormon family was in this. I can’t deal.
This entire video is problematic to me. Shall we make bullet points?
- Dude puts on blackface (possibly to illustrate racism, but not entirely made clear. either way, totally fucked up)
- He keeps asking questions but then not providing answers when they are answered incorrectly in ignorance. What’s the point of making a video to illustrate how ignorant and racist some people are if you don’t correct them on it? How is showing it helping if you just leave them hanging there thinking that their racist bullshit is totally okay?
- The end of the video said that he was called out by 3 people on wearing blackface. Why didn’t the video show us that? That could have been a very good moment.
- The questions themselves, for that matter, were often as fucked up (e.g., “Would you rather date a black guy that acts like a white guy or a white guy that acts like a black guy?” and “do an impression of a black guy”) as the answers given by the interviewees.
- There is no context given for the purpose of this video. It really just almost looks like he randomly got the idea to up on blackface and then had to come up with some project to “justify” it. (and tying in with the above point the phrase “you’d know a black guy if you saw him.”)
I just cannot get over the fact that there is no moment of addressing the racist responses from the interviewees in this video. What is the point of illuminating people’s racism/ignorance if you’re not going to make an effort to correct that? If only for their sake? Most of the racist shit that got said here was just done COMPLETELY out of ignorance, and leaving them hanging in that place of ignorance doesn’t help anyone. There needs to be a moment of “okay. You’re saying some really racist stuff. Here, let’s turn this into a teaching moment.” And there isn’t in this video.
also: THAT DUDE WAS WEARING BLACKFACE THE WHOLE TIME. That is in no way okay.
